  29.     With some assistance from the Canadian Government, Innotech
  30.     Inc. and Marpex Inc. are developing a revolutionary indexing
  31.     and retrieval system that deals with multiple data types using
  32.     a regular 386 based PC as an index building platform.

  34.     Developing an indexing and retrieval system for large databases
  35.     normally requires an investment of several hundred thousand
  36.     dollars.  The Mass Indexing and Retrieval (MIR) project seeks
  37.     to cut everyone's costs.  We are exploring an innovative
  38.     software distribution method.  By providing source code under
  39.     the Free Software Foundation GNU Public Licence, we are
  40.     encouraging people to develop the product further.  Whether
  41.     this concept will work depends on your level of support.  With
  42.     enough participation, we can indeed make these powerful tools
  43.     available to a lot of people at extremely affordable prices.

  45.     The Free Software Foundation license maximizes your freedom to
  46.     improve upon and to distribute the project's copyleft software. 
  47.     "Copyleft" means you can do almost anything with the software
  48.     except copyright it.  See the file 05LICENS for detail.  The
  49.     sampler contains outlines of five sets of tutorials plus source
  50.     code and DOS executable versions of representative MIR software
  51.     tools.  Copy the software, tinker, improve, port to another
  52.     machine, enjoy, distribute freely the sampler and the software!

  92.     The PC-compatible diskette sampler introduces the Mass Indexing
  93.     and Retrieval (MIR) project.  Insert the diskette, and input
  94.     the command "TYPE A:README.MIR" or "TYPE B:README.MIR" to get
  95.     started.  Topic # 1 (the file 01WHAT) describes each Tutorial
  96.     and shows the schedule of releases.  You may make copies of the
  97.     sampler for your friends.

  100. Terms of sale:

  102.     The sampler ($5 on diskette, $15 on paper) may be copied
  103.     freely, provided no changes are made.  The printed tutorials
  104.     are copyright, and are not to be copied.  The software
  105.     accompanying each tutorial may be copied under terms of the
  106.     Free Software Foundation GNU Public License, included in the
  107.     sampler.  The first copy of each tutorial together with
  108.     software costs $95; additional copies in the same shipment to
  109.     the same address are $49 each.  United States and overseas
  110.     prices are in United States dollars.  Shipments within Canada
  111.     may be paid in Canadian funds, but are subject to G.S.T.

  116.     We welcome reasonable quantities of questions from those who

  126.     situations, two kinds of consulting are available.

  128.     Innotech has extensive experience in CD-ROM publishing and
  129.     preparation of "FindIT" indexing for text and multimedia.
  130.     Innotech also builds integrated custom search and retrieval
  131.     systems compatible with standards that are emerging (SFQL, CD-
  132.     RDx and "split code" techniques).

  134.     Marpex' strength is in teaching, database analysis, and
  135.     creative development of indexing and retrieval technology. 
  136.     Text and initial "copyleft" portions of software for the MIR
  137.     project are written by Douglas Lowry (Ph.D. in Management,
  138.     M.I.T.), creator of the FindIt CD-ROM system in 1984-85.
